Deadlock mods not working after an update

If your mods worked yesterday and today the game looks vanilla, a Deadlock update has almost certainly reset one file: gameinfo.gi. The mods are still installed; the game just stopped loading them.

Why it happens

Deadlock loads mods from the folder game/citadel/addons only when the file game/citadel/gameinfo.gi tells it to. Updates replace gameinfo.gi with Valve's copy, which doesn't mention the addons folder, so every mod is skipped until the line is back.

How to tell

  • Every mod is gone at once (one broken mod would only affect its own part).
  • Steam updated Deadlock since you last played.
  • The mod files are still in game/citadel/addons, named pak01_dir.vpk, pak02_dir.vpk and so on.

The automatic fix

Frogtech Mod Loader watches gameinfo.gi and puts the line back within seconds of an update, so you never notice. It also updates the mods themselves when their makers post new versions. Deadlock Mod Manager fixes the file when you start the game through it.

Frogtech Mod Loader: install mods with one click; it keeps them on after game updates.

The fix by hand

  1. 1
    Close Deadlock.
  2. 2
    Open Deadlock/game/citadel/gameinfo.gi in a text editor (in Steam: right-click Deadlock, Manage, Browse local files).
  3. 3
    Find the SearchPaths block. Add Game citadel/addons right before Game citadel, and the four Mod and Write lines after Game core, like below.
  4. 4
    Save, then start the game.
gameinfo.gi
SearchPaths
{
    Game_UILanguage   citadel_*LANGUAGE*
    Game_LowViolence  citadel_lv

    Game              citadel/addons
    Game              citadel
    Game              core
    Mod               citadel
    Write             citadel
    Mod               core
    Write             core
}

Tip: Don't skip the Mod and Write lines. With only the addons line, Deadlock stops at start with "Unable to read default keybinding configuration" and Steam reports the game files as corrupt.

Tip: Back the file up before editing it. If you break it, Steam's Verify integrity of game files puts the original back.

You'll need to do this again after every update, which is what a mod manager saves you.

Still not working?

  • The mod itself needs an update: mods that change the HUD or menus copy game files, and a big game update can change those. Check the mod's page for a new version.
  • The file names have a gap: the game loads pak01_dir.vpk, pak02_dir.vpk and so on, and stops at the first missing number.
  • gameinfo.gi is read-only: right-click it, Properties, and untick Read-only, so a mod manager can fix it.
